Today’s Theology Thursdays post continues our systematic theological treatment of soteriology (the study of the doctrine of salvation). This post will examine what the Bible teaches about saving faith.
Saving faith is a commitment consisting of three elements: knowledge, acceptance, and obedience (highbrow readers insisting on Latin: notitia, assensus, and fiducia).
The presentation concludes with the excellent hymn text by Daniel Webster Whittle: “I Know Whom I Have Believed.”

Greetings Brother,
Excellent post as usual. I like how you broke down the three key areas of Knowledge, Trust and Obedience. Far too often in modern evangelical circles folks place emphasis on just “accept Christ as your personal Savior,” or just “give your heart to Jesus.” They skip Knowledge and Obedience and rely on emotion (trust/feeling) alone.
Unfortunately, this rarely leads to true conversion. One of the key aspects of lacking is the conviction of the Holy Spirit. John 3:19 makes it clear (Also Romans 1) that man knows and understands sin/darkness but is so drawn to it refuses to go to the light (Jesus) even when he sees the light. Only by the conviction of the Holy Spirit can man be drawn to saving faith. The following is a quote from an article I like:
THE HOLY SPIRIT is revealed as ‘proceeding from the Father,’––as ‘sent by the Son from the Father,’––as ‘testifying’ of Christ,’––as ‘glorifying Christ,’––as ‘bearing witness’ of Him,––as ‘convincing the world of sin, because they believe not on Him,’-as ‘shining into the hearts of men, and giving them the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ,”––as renewing them in the spirit of their minds,’––as ‘quickening them’ into spiritual life,––as ‘the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Christ,––as ‘the Spirit that dwelleth in us’––that ‘worketh in us’––that ‘guideth us into all truth’––that ‘helpeth our infirmities’––that ‘witnesseth with our spirits that we are the children of God,’––as ‘the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance.’ (2 John 15:26, 16:14; 1 John 5:6; John 15:8-9; Eph. 1:17,14). https://www.monergism.com/father-son-and-holy-spirit-each-have-part-saving-sinners

Thanks, brother. And that’s a great quote from Scottish theologian James Buchanan!
