Just now back this evening from Basics, Day 2. Outstanding teaching again from all three speakers. Here are a couple quotes I really liked from John Shearer who, at the time, was warning about the lure of possessions and worldly things:
“Possessions are the luggage of time.”
“We are all on a journey between two moments of nakedness.”
Alistair Begg preached today from 1 Corinthians on “Paul and the Cross of Christ.” One especially poignant statement:
“Until the gravity of sin is intensified, the immensity of God’s love is trivialized.”
How true! I’m afraid far too many Christians really know nothing of the love of God because for them God’s love is some kind of discrete and detached concept. Like Alistair, I believe God’s love can be fully known only when we see it against the black backdrop of our wretched sinfulness. Then, when our union with Christ is internalized by the Christian, that we are forever “in Christ Jesus,” we live out the imperatives of the New Testament–not because we have to, but because we want to. In the words of Charles Gabriel:
I stand amazed in the presence
of Jesus the Nazarene,
and wonder how he could love me,
a sinner, condemned, unclean.
How marvelous! How wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful
is my Savior’s love for me!
